Summary

In this domestic thriller, sex, ambitions, and disaster burn more intensely than the Los Angeles sun。

Emily is a top talent agent who rules the land of talk shows and reality TV。 Whip-smart and brutally practical, she outmaneuvers all rivals…except in her personal life。 Emily willfully ignores her CEO husband Doug’s philandering in exchange for their glamorous one-percenter lifestyle, until a surprise pregnancy changes everything。

A TED-Talking business guru with a reckless streak, Doug embarks on an audacious relationship with Chloe, the stunning young receptionist at his market research firm。 But Chloe has a secret: a volatile past she’s desperate to forget。 Their chaotic entanglement sets off a chain of shocking scandals, plunging Emily into a scheming fight for survival。

As they each try to fight their way to the top, there’s only one question: How far will Emily go to protect her child and preserve her carefully curated life?

I love Amazon First Reads as you get the books a month early and can enjoy it before others do。 Great characters, great writing and you should take this book to the beach (or your back yard, porch or balcony) and enjoy it - just wear a tonne of SPF110 as you will lose track of time as you read this。 - If we are in the 5th or 6th wave/mutation of COVID19 by then, stay inside: no tan is worth dying for。 🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️ #maddogsandenglishmen#amazonfirstreads

I loved this book! It was a total page turner, I absolutely could not put it down!! There were so many plot twists, the book kept me enthralled。 From Emily the cutthroat, hard working publicist - do not get in her way。 Doug - the charming, drug addict, failure/wonder-boy, Chloe - the pathetic actress/receptionist, so craving affection but also with anger issues from mysterious sources, Dr。 Maryn - the reality series marionette star。 The characters were all extremely interesting, you never knew w I loved this book! I was on the fence with my opinions about this book。 There was some great, good and bad parts of this book。 Let me explain further:The great:Characterization of Emily, Doug (dbag husband to Emily), and Chloe (pregnant, other woman)。。 They are all a bunch of over-opinionated, strong, narcissistic people I would never be friends with in real life。 Toxic relations galore。What I also enjoy, Emily trying to get her revenge against Doug, not realizing how f**ked up Chloe is as a person。The cover , wri I was on the fence with my opinions about this book。 There was some great, good and bad parts of this book。 Let me explain further:The great:Characterization of Emily, Doug (dbag husband to Emily), and Chloe (pregnant, other woman)。。 They are all a bunch of over-opinionated, strong, narcissistic people I would never be friends with in real life。 Toxic relations galore。What I also enjoy, Emily trying to get her revenge against Doug, not realizing how f**ked up Chloe is as a person。The cover , writing and overall story and a quick readThe good:Was not predictable, and I hate that in any book。The endingThe bad:Could have had more suspense/thrill moments, it was a slow burn。Very dislikable charactersStill recommended, may read this again after publication in the future。 Thanks to Netgalley, Kate Myles and Thoman Mercer publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review。Available: 8/1/21 。。。more

I’ve had two seriously toxic books back to back! This one is full of loathsome, reprehensible characters and scandalous, unhinged drama______________________________Emily knows that her husband Doug is a perpetual cheater, but she looks the other way in order to maintain their lifestyle。That takes a sharp turn for the worse when Doug starts sleeping with his new receptionist。。。。 👀

This book is a wild ride that I could not put down。 I love that is started by delving deeply into the characters, until the thriller roots took over and pulled me through to the end。

While I didn’t read it in one sitting because life got in the way, I easily could have despite its length。This is the sort of book where all of the characters are narcissistic, toxic, truly awful people, and yet you still love to hate them。 I love the sort of book that is a train wreck that you can’t look away from, and this book certainly fits the bill。While every character is clearly unreliable, Chloe seemed particularly unhinged from the start, and I was eager to see how her scenes would play out。 I love how the author built suspense around her interactions with Doug, and the reader just knows it’s all going to explode in the most entertaining way possible。 I enjoyed the alternating POVs, changing between Emily, Doug, and Chloe’s perspectives。 The writing style was very well done and attacked the plot effectively from all sides。The beginning starts off a little slow with a lot of tone-setting: a lot of scenes where Doug is using Chloe for sex and Chloe thinks it’s true love, a lot of backstory, and a lot of reasoning why Emily is still with Doug。 The ending is worth the wait though, with twists I didn’t see coming。 。。。more

(which I loved) She tolerates Doug, because she enjoys their 1% lifestyle。 Doug runs his own Market Research firm and he is the kind of man that every woman seems to notice。And, let’s just say that he notices them back。 And, Chloe, is a beautiful, but naive girl who does “on site performance art” and thinks she will find success with that, and with Doug, though she knows he is married and that she isn’t the first he has strayed with。 She confuses a gift of a Prada blouse, and his desire to “have her” in Public places for true love。 I found the Corporate shenanigans, the “performance art” and the frequent sex scenes, between Doug and Chloe, BORING。This entire middle section of the book lacked the THRILLS I was expecting, especially after the JUICY opening scene where Chloe arrives for an interview with Emily at her talent agency! Eventually the book circles back around to THRILLER territory in the final 25%, with a SATISFYING conclusion, but the middle is going to keep this one in the 3 ⭐️ range for me! Still, I would be interested to see what the author comes up with next。。Thank You to Thomas & Mercer for the gifted copy! It was my pleasure to provide a candid review! For Chloe, the past just won’t stay in the past。 And her new job as a receptionist at Doug’s firm will make sure of just that。This book is a lesson in unlikable characters。 If you need a protagonist to root for, you’re not going to enjoy this book。 I don’t think you can。 But because of the unlikable characters, Myles opens the door to a world with no rules。 What is different about The Receptionist is it is not a plot driven thriller。 It’s a character study on shitty people。 There aren’t many plot beats, hardly an inciting incident, and the rising action falls a bit flat, but none of that really matters because you’ve gone so deep into the minds of these characters that you just want to find out where they end up。 While the plot is one you’ve read time and time again, The Receptionist gives you an inside look into the heads of the worst kind of people。 And that is what makes it a compelling story and worth the read。The Receptionist is expected to be released 7/6/2021。Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
